Let me tell you about a deck that's been quietly sitting on our shelves for a few months now, and honestly, it's one of those items I didn't expect to like as much as I do. It's called the Before Tarot Deck — 78 pieces, "One Moment Before," with keywords printed right on the cards. The idea behind it is simple: each card shows the moment just before the scene you already know from a traditional tarot deck. So instead of the Two of Cups as you'd normally see it, you get what led up to that meeting. That single shift in perspective is what makes this deck worth a closer look, and it's why I keep recommending it to people who already own three or four tarot decks but want something that feels different without being gimmicky. You can find it on the product page under SKU P3256808493720898, if you want to bookmark it. Now, let's talk about what it's actually made of, because this is where I get picky. These are printed on a textured card stock with a matte finish, not the flimsy glossy stuff you sometimes get in budget decks. The cards have a bit of flex to them when you bend one gently — they spring back rather than creasing, which tells me the paper core is decent. The edges are cleanly cut, no burrs or ragged corners, and the printing is sharp enough that the small keyword text on each card is readable without squinting. They shuffle well straight out of the box, though I'll mention they can stick slightly at first if your hands run warm. That fades after a few sessions. The box itself is a sturdy two-piece cardboard thing, nothing fancy, and it'll hold up fine on a shelf as long as you don't toss it around. And at 13.24, the build quality you're getting for the money is honestly better than I expected when I first ordered stock. Here are the exact specifications, so there's no guessing. The deck is 78 cards, full tarot structure — 22 majors and 56 minors — and each card measures 10.3 by 6 centimeters. That's the standard tarot size most people are used to, so if you own any other deck, these will feel familiar in your hands. Sizes across the range are standard, meaning you don't need to hunt for a special pouch or tray. As for colors, the artwork leans into a muted, earthy palette — lots of warm ochres, deep greens, soft blues — and the exact color variants available are listed on the product page, so check there before you order if a specific edition matters to you. I will say the color reproduction is consistent from card to card, which isn't always the case at this price point. So what do you actually do with it in daily life? Three scenarios come up again and again with customers. First, personal reflection in the morning — you pull one card, read the keyword, and sit with the "before" moment it depicts. It's a great prompt for journaling because it asks you what led to a situation rather than what the situation is. Second, family game nights. I know that sounds odd for a tarot deck, but these cards work surprisingly well for storytelling games — each person draws a card and improvises what happens next, building a story together. Kids tend to love it, and it gets everyone off their phones. Third, casual readings for friends. If you read for other people, the keyword printed on each card makes it much easier to explain your interpretation without sounding like you're making it up on the spot. It's a teaching deck as much as a reading deck. Using and maintaining it is straightforward, and I'll give you the practical version. Shuffle gently at first — riffle shuffling is fine once they're broken in, but for the first week or two I'd suggest overhand shuffling or just spreading them on a table and mixing. Keep them away from direct sunlight, because prolonged UV exposure will fade the matte finish faster than you'd think. If your hands are oily, wipe the cards with a dry microfiber cloth after a session instead of letting residue build up. Don't store them somewhere damp — cardboard and humidity are enemies. A simple cotton drawstring bag works great as a secondary home if you don't want to keep using the box. That's it. No special cleanses required, no elaborate rituals, unless you enjoy those, in which case go for it. Now the honest part, because I'd rather you know before buying than return it later. The pros: the artwork concept is genuinely clever, the keywords make it beginner-friendly, the card stock holds up, and the price is low enough that it's an easy gift. The cons: the keywords, while useful, can feel a little on-the-nose if you're an experienced reader who prefers pure imagery — some people find them distracting during intuitive readings. The box is functional but not display-worthy. And because the deck reframes classic scenes, it isn't ideal as your very first tarot deck if you're still memorizing traditional meanings — you'd be learning the "before" versions alongside the standard ones, which can get confusing. Buy it as a second deck, not a first. From a design standpoint, this deck works because it solves a real problem: most tarot decks assume you already know the story. "Before" flips that. By showing the moment preceding each familiar scene and stamping a keyword on the card, it lowers the barrier to entry without dumbing anything down. The 10.3 by 6 centimeter format keeps it portable and familiar, and the muted palette prevents visual fatigue during long readings. It suits three types of people best: beginners who want training wheels, journalers who want a daily prompt, and experienced readers who are bored with their current deck and want a fresh angle. If you fall into any of those groups, this one earns its place on your table. It's listed at 13.24, SKU P3256808493720898, and you can grab it while stock lasts.
