A Lip Pencil That Actually Stays Put: Our 12-Color Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil I'll be straight with you — I've sold a lot of lip products over the years, and most of them fall into two camps. Either they're creamy and comfortable but gone by lunch, or they're budge-proof and feel like you painted your lips with a Sharpie. Finding one that sits in the middle is rarer than it should be. So when this 12-color velvet matte lipstick pencil came through our stock room (SKU P4001260636843), I tested it myself before putting it on the shelf. And honestly? It earned its spot. Let's talk about what it's made of, because that's what determines everything else. The core is a wax-and-oil paste base blended with high-density pigment, which is why the color payoff is so strong from the first swipe. The supplier describes the paste as smooth and not greasy, and that matches what I found — it glides on without that slippery, oily feel some cheap pencils have. The barrel is a standard twist-up or sharpenable pencil format with a matte finish that doesn't feel flimsy in the hand. There's a bit of weight to it, which I always take as a good sign. The cap clicks on securely, which matters more than people think — a loose cap in a purse means a lipstick disaster on your favorite bag lining. Build quality overall is solid for the price point. Nobody's going to mistake it for a luxury counter brand, but it won't fall apart on you either. On specifications: each pencil contains one full-size lipstick pencil, and the set spans twelve shades. The colors lean heavily toward reds, berries, and warm nudes — everything from a soft everyday rose to a bold, unapologetic sexy red. There's a reason reds dominate here; that's what sells. The pencil format is a standard size, slim enough to fit a back pocket or the tiny inner pocket of a wallet. Each pencil has a three-year shelf life, and it's formulated for general skin types, so no special matching required if your lips are dry, oily, or somewhere in between. Ingredients and shade names are printed on the packaging, and you can see the full color chart in the product photos. So what do you actually do with it? More than you'd think. The obvious one: a night out. The velvet matte finish reads as low-key luxurious rather than glossy, which pairs well with a smoky eye or a clean-faced look with strong brows. My second scenario is a full workday. I put this on at 7:40 in the morning, drank two coffees and a water bottle, ate a sandwich at noon, and the color was still visibly there afterward. That's the waterproof, sweatproof formula doing its job — it's designed to resist transfer, so it won't smear all over your teeth or your coffee cup rim. The third is travel and events. Weddings, graduations, long flights, humid outdoor parties — anywhere you can't easily duck into a bathroom to reapply. And because the pencil format means you can line and fill with the same tool, you skip carrying a separate lip liner. Using it properly makes a difference, though. Start with clean, dry lips. If they're flaky, exfoliate gently first — matte formulas in general will grab onto dry patches and make them more visible. Outline your lip shape with the tip, then fill inward. Blot once with a tissue and apply a second thin layer if you want maximum staying power. That two-layer trick is the difference between four hours and eight. For removal and maintenance, don't scrub at your lips with a tissue — use an oil-based makeup remover or a cleansing balm, which breaks the formula down in seconds. Store the pencil somewhere room temperature, not in a hot car, because sustained heat softens any wax-based lipstick and makes the tip mushy. And keep the cap on when it's rolling around in your bag. Now the honest part, because you deserve it. Pros: the color payoff is genuinely rich and full-coverage, the matte texture is comfortable rather than drying, the staying power is excellent, and twelve shades at this price is a steal. The pencil format makes precise application easy even if you've never used a lip liner before. Cons: matte formulas will always highlight dry or chapped lips, so if you're someone who never exfoliates, this will tell on you. It's also not a gloss — if you want shine, this isn't it. And because it clings so well, you absolutely need a proper oil-based remover; soap and water alone will leave residue. Also worth noting: the price is $12.14 for the set, which is roughly a dollar a pencil, so if you fall in love with one shade and want to restock, you'll probably be buying the whole set again rather than a single replacement. Small tradeoff. From a formulation standpoint, here's why this design works. Velvet matte is essentially a middle ground between a traditional matte and a cream finish. The pigment particles are suspended in a wax base that sets quickly on contact with your lip's surface temperature, which is what locks the color in and gives it that resistance to water and sweat. Because the base is low in oil, it doesn't bleed into fine lines around the mouth the way slicker formulas do — that's why the pencil shape works so well here, since you can trace a clean edge and the formula won't wander. This makes it a strong fit for people who are busy and don't want to think about their lipstick every two hours, people who work long shifts or attend all-day events, and people who want bold color without fuss. It suits a wide age range, and honestly it suits more experienced makeup wearers and beginners equally — the pencil does the precision work for you. If you've been burned by long-wear lipsticks that felt like sandpaper, or creamy ones that vanished, give this set a shot. Twelve shades means you can experiment without committing to one color you might not love. Swing by our store page and take a look at the full color swatches, and while you're there you can use code P4001260636843 to look up the exact listing. As always, if you've got questions about which shades lean warm or cool, message us and we'll tell you straight.
